Tasmania the last refuge for Jews'A shame,' says Aussie mullahHOBART, Tasmania (RWN) - Australia's dirty little secret is a secret no longer. With the tacit approval of the Australian government, the province of Tasmania, off the Australian coast, has become a colony for Jews. The story was reported today by the Melbourne Scimitar, an Islamic newspaper in Melbourne. Australian Prime Minister John Keeler stood by his government's decision to give Jews a safe haven. "Yes, I am a Muslim, and a good Muslim," he said. "That means acting with compassion and dignity. What the Zionists did during the Great Zionist Betrayal was a terrible thing to our allies, and to our holiest city, but Allah would say 'Open our hearts' and I have." Pragmatically, it also makes for a more peaceful Australia, which became a violent place after mass conversions in the earlier part of the century. The Scimitar reported that Tasmania's population had shifted to 80 percent Jewish, with the remaining 20 percent a mixture of religions, but very few Muslims. "They mostly moved out when we started arriving," said Roswell Steinberg, the mayor of Hobart, the island's largest city. "When I got here 10 years ago from Canberra, it was maybe 30 percent Jewish. But as the word got around - particularly in America and Canada - the population just slid our way." Mary Goldman, a former lawyer from San Francisco, Calif., found her way to Hobart from Vancouver, B.C., where she fled after the Great Zionist Betrayal. "Vancouver was wonderful to us, and I'll always be grateful to the Canadians for the help they gave, but I wanted to be around my own people and not have to worry 'Is someone going to recognize that I'm Jewish and try and kill me?'" The Scimitar reported that Keeler and other government officials asked the paper to suppress its story and that Steinberg made an emotional plea, as well. "Please, please, haven't our people suffered enough," Steinberg wrote in an e-mail published by the paper. "We're not bothering anyone here. Please, let us and our children just live in peace." No one would say that Tasmania's economy was thriving - its chief export is timber, but the Jews have found a way to make a life for themselves there, the paper reported, creating a vast underground of business contacts from companies willing to do business with them. "I would say to anyone who wants to try and exterminate us that they really shouldn't, Steinberg said. "The prime minister himself has assured me that the full forces of Australia can be brought to protect Australian citizens. And if they can't, well, it wouldn't be the first time the Jews have faced long odds with the business end of a rifle." Comments | Tell A Friend | Run for President |
